Ties that Bind
The Blurb

Kate Yager never had a father, and she never minded - until her mom died. Now, acting on the name called out on her mother's deathbed, Kate has moved to San Francisco and gotten herself hired by the man she suspects to be her dad. As if a new job, new apartment, and new parent weren't enough, Kate finds herself head-over-heels in lust with a complete stranger she met at an art show. A stranger who, she later finds out, happens to work in her office.

As her relationships with her friends and father grow stronger, Kate has to confront the decisions of her past to find out whether she can love the man who gave her up, love the man who loves her truly, and even whether she can love herself.

Interview!!!

Character Interview:
* How crazy was the decision to move to San Francisco?

It was the craziest thing I’ve ever done, by far. I schedule and plan every inch of my life – I have no idea what possessed me to move 1,000 miles away from everything I’ve ever known to go work for a complete stranger who might or might not be my father. I blame temporary insanity.

*Yummy stranger? Tell us more about that first encounter.

I didn’t know it was possible for a person to forget to breathe and still be on the verge of hyperventilating at the same time before that moment. I mean, Gavin’s the kind of guy who makes you blush at your own thoughts. I was so sure he knew it, too, with that little half grin of his.

*How hard was it to keep your secret to yourself while working with your dad?

A part of me was begging him to recognize me – to see something of himself or my mother in me. I craved the affirmation that would bring. The rest of me was terrified he’d realize who I was. That fear permeated my first few days at the magazine. Many times I almost told him just to have it all over with!

*Facing your past is never an easy thing. What gave you the strength to do so?

When my mother passed away, it made me appreciate how fleeting life can be. She died without getting the chance to face her past, and I could tell how much it haunted her still. I didn’t want to find myself on my own deathbed someday, chased by the ghosts of what might have been.

*How hard was it to let yourself love Gavin?

That was probably the second hardest thing I’ve ever done – right after packing my bags for San Francisco. I was such a mess after everything with my mother and finding Jack again… it was terrifying to simply let go and admit how I felt about Gavin. I really didn’t know if I could handle another heartbreak.

*It really seemed to hit home when Gavin played the song Angel for you. What was it about that song that struck such a chord?

Gavin had no way of knowing this, but I still remember the exact moment my mother told me she had cancer. I was shuffling through radio stations, complaining that there was never anything good on. I was in the mood for something like Aeorosmith’s Angel and all I kept finding was Hootie and the Blowfish or commercials. It was driving me insane. I was so intent on finding that one particular song that it took me a minute to register what my mom had said.

That’s always been my favorite song, but after that day, it took on a whole new level of meaning. And to have him sing it, and for it to fit so perfectly where we were at the moment… I just came undone.

*At the end of the day, would you do anything at all differently?

I would have spent less time being afraid and more time living life. And I wouldn’t have let Gavin talk me into that canoe while I was wearing my favorite shoes.
